What Can Replace an Absent Object?
Letters written but never sent; sent, but lost; dreamed letters; letters never written, yet imagined line by line, word by word; torn letters, burned letters, silenced letters, hidden letters, letters found by someone who knows neither who wrote them nor whom they were meant for, yet is moved because every stroke distills something human.
Just as a photograph represents a place or a person who is not directly present, letters are the in absentia voices of those who narrate and write them.
